Dr. Brown often says, “The most important anti-aging product that anyone can use is a sunscreen,” regardless of what your skincare regimen looks like, it should always include sunscreen. Constant exposure to the sun’s harsh ultraviolet rays can be highly detrimental to the skin, leading to premature signs of aging, a damaged skin barrier, fine lines and dark spots, and an increased risk of sunburn. Fortunately, consistent sunscreen application can prevent much of this.
The two ultraviolet rays primarily harming our skin are Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B, associated with aging and burning respectively. Prolonged exposure to both can damage the skin cells on the outer layer of our skin, contributing to premature aging of the skin like dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles, increased sunburn, and in some cases skin cancer. This damage, Dr. Brown says, is cumulative. “The sun damage you get at age sixteen stays with you throughout your lifetime- so it can’t be reversed.” The body is able to repair some of the skin cell damage, however unrepaired damage continues to build up overtime.
While it can’t be reversed, Dr. Brown assures it can be prevented. An effective shield against sun damage, sunscreen can block harmful UV rays from penetrating your skin barrier and reduces the likelihood of aging or sunburn. However, application needs to be consistent. “You absolutely need an SPF on a cloudy day- SPF even indoors, sometimes if you’re in an airplane, a sunny room- so yes, SPF always.” Not only does it need to be applied everyday, but Dr. Brown suggests reapplication “at least every two hours if actively in the sun- especially if sweating or swimming.”
