Seasonal Changes and Our Skin

As the weather becomes colder, many people start to notice changes in their skin’s health. As skin learns to transition to brisker days, it may begin to experience unwanted dryness and inflammation that come about due to a sudden disruption to the skin barrier. While there is nothing we can do about the weather, there are many ways to care for your skin to make sure it maintains a healthy and glowing appearance. RéVive Elite Esthetician, Klaudia Wachowski, joins The RéView Editors to share her tips and advice on how to help your skin adjust to weather fluctuations.

Q: Why do people experience seasonal skin changes?

A: When seasons change, weather conditions change – factors like temperature, sun exposure, wind and frost all affect our skin differently.

Q: In what ways do weather fluctuations affect skin’s health?

A: During the summer, our skin is typically exposed to heat and sun, and we perspire more which can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and dehydration. On the contrary, during wintertime, our skin is exposed to harsher weather in the form of low temperatures and cold winds that can, in turn, irritate and dehydrate skin, ultimately leading to sensitivity.

Q: How can someone take proper care of their skin as it adjusts to colder weather?

A: As we transition into colder weather, I recommend adjusting your skincare routine to include heavier and richer products. In the morning, it is important to apply a day serum that is emollient like Moisturizing Renewal Hydrogel, in addition to SPF for sun protection, as the winter sun can be very strong. At night is when our skin recovers from irritating factors like harsh weather conditions, so this would be the time to use a good, hydrating serum, or oil-based serum like Rescue Elixir, followed by a rich night cream like Moisturizing Renewal Night Cream. I also recommend exfoliation approximately twice a week with a gentle exfoliant like Le Polish, as well as using a face mask like Masque De Radiance for added hydration and skin clarity.

Q: Are there any specific ingredients that you recommend incorporating in a skincare regimen during colder days?

A: My suggestion is to incorporate ingredients that bring hydration and comfort to your skin as part of your daily beauty regimen. These ingredients can include Shea Butter, Murumuru Butter, Olive Oil, Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid or Sodium Hyaluronate, Probiotics and Niacinamide. Not only do these calm skin, but they also help reduce redness and balance the microbiome of the skin for a healthier look. Other ingredients like Aloe Vera and Bisabolol also help soothe skin and reduce redness.
